Since its founding, Electrical Equipment Company, Inc. has remained a business true to its reputation, and rich in heritage and tradition. Bill Smith started with the firm, then known as the Henry J Damn Company, in 1936. Registered with the Indiana Secretary of State in 1939, Electrical Equipment Company, Inc. was born. EECO opened as a manufacturer's rep firm prior to World War II, selling switchgear and lighting fixtures. Bill Smith, as a member of the Army Air Corp, served his country in World War II from 1942-1945. The end of the war in 1945 brought Bill home, and back to EECO, where we sold our first fire alarm system in 1948.
The 1960's were an eventful time in our history. In the early 60's, Bill changed the firm's focus to alarms and signaling. Having been with EECO since its
inception, Bill decided in 1965 that he liked it so much, he bought the company. Bill (along with his wife Katie, who was active in the company until just recently) remained at the helm of EECO until 1985, when he moved into semi-retirement and passed the torch on to his son, and our current President, Bob.
Bob Smith, a 1969 Rose Hulman electrical engineering graduate, knows a little about tradition himself. Like his father, he also served his country in South Korea from 1970 to 1971. Before purchasing 100% of the business in 1985, Bob had essentially covered all the bases at EECO, working as a field engineer, application manager, and the position he currently holds, President and CEO. Bob has had many roles with the National Independent Fire Alarm Distributors (NIFAD), including service on the board of directors since 1989, and as president from 1995 to 1997. He is also active in the Construction League of Indiana, the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), and in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), having served as President of the Indiana Chapter.
Today, Electrical Equipment Company, Inc. is an integrated signaling communications company providing fire alarm detection, sound, video, voice and data infrastructures, and media delivery. Covering the state of Indiana with twenty-two employees, we recently furnished systems for such clients as: The Indiana Convention Center (Audio/Video, Sound and Telecommunications Systems), Ball State University (Fire Alarm System in Studebaker West Hall), and the Indianapolis Star-News (Closed Circuit Television System). EECO continues to build on its long-standing reputation by being highly competitive in the bidding process, which allows us to "design and build" fast-track projects that result in timely completion and customer savings.
